New army chief should keep the same distance from all parties
Maronite patriarch says the country’s democratic life should be reactivated and its social services revived for they guarantee peace. He adds that “inter-confessional parties” are needed.
Beirut (AsiaNews) – Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir yesterday called for a Lebanese Army commander who was above confessional party politics and a full return to democracy.
During a meeting with a Caritas delegation at his summer home in Diman, the cardinal said he hoped that the new army commander who replaced Michel Suleiman, elected to the presidency, would keep his distance “from all political parties.”
The patriarch also talked about democracy and the need to “reactivate democratic life and breathe new life into the social services that guarantee peace.”
Moreover, “democracy,” he said, “"should take its course in Lebanon like it is in all states of the world, where the opposition opposes and the majority rules.”
Similarly, “in the name of the national interest, inter-confessional political parties should be created.”
