In Singapore, the Church aids integration of immigrants

The archdiocese is organizing projects for assimilation, and educational courses for immigrants. These include computers, dressmaking, hairdressing, in addition to English courses.

Singapore (AsiaNews/Agencies) - The archdiocese of Singapore is increasingly decisive in the social life of the state. Last November 9, 400 immigrants received their diplomas as domestic workers. The ceremony, celebrated at the church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, marked the end of a process of formation that began in 2001, and has now become a point of reference for those in need.

Through its Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ACMI), the archdiocese has created a program for integration in formation, hosting various workshops in its own offices. The graduates are now educated in computers, dressmaking, hairdressing, and have also improved their English.

The chairperson of the ACMI, Connie Fong, says she is satisfied with the results obtained by these "uncommon students." Volunteer professionals have offered to teach the courses, and have guaranteed that they will continue to help these people to realize their dreams. "With the right skill, there may be opportunities for you to join other industries here in Singapore," Fong said during the ceremony. The archdiocese is also working with the Singapore American School: volunteer teachers are giving courses in computers, and those interested in finding work as caretakers are being assisted by experts in the study of medical care.
