Extended detention for Ahed Tamimi, the teenager who slapped a soldier

It is the fourth time that her detention has been extended. She had become famous with a viral video in which she smacked a soldier. The lawyer: the rights of the child are being violated.

Jerusalem (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The Israeli military court of Ofer has prolonged the detention of Ahed Tamimi, a 16-year-old Palestinian teenager, for the fourth time.  She is the protagonist of a viral video in which she smacks an Israeli soldier.

At yesterday's hearing, in addition to the girl's family, foreign diplomats and human rights activists were present. Her case will be reviewed again tomorrow after "further investigation".

The video dates back to December 15th. After finding out that her 15-year-old cousin had been injured by a close range shot during a protest (see photo # 2), Tamimi hurled herself at Israeli soldiers who had entered her village near Ramallah, who did not react. The young woman was then arrested on the night of December 19th.

Gaby Lasky, a lawyer for the young militant, accuses Israel of violating the international convention on the rights of the child, according to which the prison for a minor must be "a last resort measure and have the shortest possible duration".

Tamimi already faces a dozen charges for past incidents, including incitement, assault and throwing stones, for which the authorities had never prosecuted her. The military prosecutor will call 18 witnesses, mostly soldiers. The trial could take several months.

Israeli military courts deny Palestinian minors bail in 70% of cases. A 2013 Unicef report states that almost all children and teenagers plead guilty to reduce their preliminary detention.
