Hundreds of Vietnamese nuns in the USA to complete their studies
Private organizations, even foreign ones, can participate in the educational system of the country. So far, the government has never granted permits to private organizations affiliated to the Church. In some cases, nuns can manage nurseries and childcare centers in large cities, if local authorities turn a blind eye.
Hanoi (AsiaNews) - The best universities and educational institutions of the American Church are welcoming hundreds of Vietnamese nuns. Over the last two years, more than 200 religious have traveled to the United States to complete their studies.
Sister Teresa Nguyễn, a doctoral student of the Lovers of the Holy Cross, says that with great commitment new nuns, most of whom come from the Archdiocese of Hà Nội (northern Vietnam), are earning the academic title of doctor in Biblical Studies, theological, philosophical and pastoral education and assistance.
Sisters receiving an education in America can help improve education within the Church and religious life in Vietnam. However, their contribution to the education of society in general could still be limited by strict government control.
Private organizations, including foreign ones, can participate in the educational system in Vietnam. Recent statistics show that 163 universities and institutes, as well as 223 middle schools, of which 50 are primary and 30 are higher, are private. However, until now the government has never granted permits to private organizations affiliated to the Church.
In some cases, the Vietnamese nuns can manage nurseries and childcare centers in large cities, if local authorities turn a blind eye. In remote areas of the country, this is somewhat impossible.
