Fujian, baby girl wrapped in plastics bag shipped to orphanage by courier

The delivery man freed the child after seeing the parcel move and hearing cries. The incident occurred in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, on Wednesday. The new-born is in good condition. The mother, 24, has been detained, but it is still unclear why she did what she did.

Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) – A baby girl wrapped in a plastic bag was shipped via courier to an orphanage.

The child is alive because the delivery man saw the parcel move and heard cries. He immediately unwrapped it and called the police. The mother now faces charges of child abandonment and could go to jail.

The incident occurred in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, on Wednesday. A video posted on The Beijing News website shows a crowd gathered around the baby as the courier waits for the authorities to arrive.

The girl was later taken to hospital in Fuzhou. A member of staff at the Jinan District Hospital confirmed to the South China Morning Post that they received a new-born girl who was in a sound condition.

The baby’s mother has been contacted by the hospital, but she and her husband have yet to come to claim the girl.

The mother is 24 and comes from Sichuan province, according to a police statement released on Thursday. If she is convicted she could get up to five years in jail.

It is still not clear what pushed her to do what she did. Media coverage has generally been negative but no one has yet to mention possible causes for such a desperate act.
